Background

The three-minute thesis speech competition is organized by U21, which aims to promote the improvement of doctoral students' technology and skills in academic, speech and research communication. The competition requires participants to present their doctoral research in three minutes to audiences who don't have relevant background.

 

Eligibility

The participants must be the doctoral students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and has already entered their doctoral thesis work stage before participating in the competition.

The language required of this competition is English.

 

Schedule

• Before August 15, 2021, students can send the registration email in the format of U21 competition + department + name + student ID + mobile phone number, and the first draft of the three-minute speech (in word format) to lilishen@sjtu.edu.cn .

• Submit the first draft video by August 25, 2021;

Experts will be invited to evaluate the first draft of the video, and students will be selected to participate in the competition. Please refer to information of "Video Requirements" below for the format of video. The first draft of the video can be uploaded to JBox.

• Submit video to U21 by 16 September 2021;

• Public voting will carry out from 20 September to 4 October 2021;

• October 2021, U21 announced the final results. 

 

Rewards

The competition will eventually produce three winners among the students recommended by each school.

First prize: USD $2,500

Second Prize: USD $500

Award for The Most Popular Viedo: USD $1,000

 

Video Requirements

• Strictly limit your speech within 3 minutes; More than three minutes won't be qualified .

• The use of a single static slide (no slide switching, animation or any dynamic effects) is allowed. Slides can be seen continuously, or presented in seperate sections, but the total duration should not exceed one minute.

• Videos can be recorded live during the three-minute event or at a selected location. The lens must be shot in a static position, and there can be lens zooming in and out.

• Three minutes of audio must be recorded continuously and cannot be edited or interrupted.

• No additional props (e.g., costumes, Musical Instruments, lab equipment, animated backgrounds, etc.).

• The speech should be delivered in everyday spoken language and not in poem, rap, or singing.

• The timing begins when the speaker begins his or her speech through action or words.

• No other electronic media material is allowed in the video.

• The decision of the review committee will be final.
